A melodic singer songwriter based by the sea, has just released a new EP, which incidentally is available as a free download, and so I caught up with him to find out more.
Bored of Idiot Chatter EP has seen Stuart move into a more definitive direction and define and perfect his style. By his own admission, his earlier stuff was acostic and had a raw edge throughout, whereas now a more rocky edge prevails with layered complimenting sound creating an overall textured effect. This is portrayed nicely in ‘Feel The Temperature Rising’ where Dry The River style vocals harmonise beautifully with persistent guitar riffs.
With a very eclectic musical taste himself, Stuart’s influences range from 60's classics The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, to heavier vibes from punk, emo and metal. It is therefore no wonder that in an age where one is surrounded by monotonous music, that Stuart is making a stir for being ‘different’. What could almost be classed as a protest song, ‘Oil’ typifies this difference in one neat little package.
Describing his style as “mellow indie melodic rock” Stuart has large ambitions where his music is concerned, but accepts the reality of the situation in that “you have to keep working and doing the next thing and then working hard some more”. This approach I feel will see him go far as he has no illusions of grandeur as to what the music business is really about which sees so many artists fall down.
Stuart doesn’t tour and says that his key focus is “to reach people through their headphones, so I place my focus there.” With such an interesting approach I have to wonder how long he can persevere with this, after all, some people, myself included, just love to listen to live music.
The quirkiest song on the EP comes in the form of ‘Cry Wolf’ and is a personal favourite. This song displays the versatility of Stuart as both a singer and a songwriter. With its interspersed sound bites, the song has an entirely different feel to the rest of the EP and comes as a refreshing interlude.
Overall, Stuart offers something different from many singer songwritiers who clutter the market at the moment, he is definitely one to watch for the future and I am curious to see where he will go next.
