Long established as one of the underground's finest talents, Professor Green has been steadily breaking into the consciousness of the mainstream in 2010. His new album Alive 'Til I'm Dead is out now. Production and collaborations comes from a myriad of musicians including Labrinth, Naughty Boy, Cores, Mike Skinner and Lily Allen.
I Like Music has 5 copies of the album to give away to 5 lucky winners! For your chance to win, just answer a simple question!
Professor Green (real name Stephen Paul Manderson) was raised by his grandmother on the Northwold Estate in Upper Clapton. Although he was a hip hop fan from a young age, he didn't realise he possessed a talent of his own until he amazed his friends at an impromptu freestyle jam session. Consequently he attended his first ever rap battle, turned up and won. He soon graduated to competing at the prestigious Jump Off events and culminated with him becoming the first UK MC to do battle at the prestigious US Mix Show Power Summit. After beating respected US MCs, Axel and Serious Jones, Green battled it out in final with the World Champion Battle MC Jin and came second. No mean feat for a Brit.
Around this time he attracted the attention of Mike Skinner, who promptly signed him to his label, The Beats, and soon he landed a presenter's slot on Radio 1's In New DJs We Trust. Unfortunately just as Pro's talents began to spread, the label was dissolved and so commenced a tricky period in which he battled to regain the rights to his master recordings from the imprint's major label financiers.
This rollercoaster ride wasn't over though. After finally regaining control of his recordings, his life was briefly in jeopardy. A violent encounter in a club led to him being stabbed in the neck. Ironically, right in the place where he'd just tattooed the word 'Lucky'.
Green took time after the stabbing to re-evaluate his life. Though he admits it's changed him forever, he was determined to see it in a positive light. "When a bad situation comes around, you either go forward focusing on the positive or on the negatives. It either buries you or makes you a stronger person," he surmises.
Throwing himself back into the studio, Green soon had his first major-label deal with Virgin and the opportunity to finally finish 'Alive Til I'm Dead.' "I like making light of the dark. No matter how dark it gets there's bits of humour in there," he says of the record. "It's a British thing I think, although I learned that from Biggie Smalls. He made some of the darkest music in rap, but there was quite a positive message."
