No we didn't see it coming either, but the fact is you couldn't move for hearing Mujava's tough, dark, marching band rhythm with that incessant wobbly synth line. In it's original form it's a relatively simple track, but as we all know all the best ones normally are, where producers often try and over complicate things Mujava captured exactly what was needed, the soul and meaning of his Township Funk.
Picked up by This Is Music Ltd, the UK base for the likes of Simian Mobile Disco, A-Trak, Frankmusik, Little Boots and Fake Blood, they first heard the track trawling through Youtube, where it had already received a lot of attention from fans across the globe. The current hit-rate stands at a mighty impressive 314,069.
Not missing a trick the label are keeping that synth line in the clubs for 2009 with a remix package which is gonna have every DJ and cool kid chomping at the bit with the likes of Diplo, Boy 8-Bit and TRG all coming correct with their own take on the Funk. Diplo's Mad Decent mix follows his love of Ghetto-Tech but goes deeper and more abstract than usual, drawing comparisons with Aphex Twin in places. Rising Romanian dubstep/two-step star TRG also delivers a very interesting mix with a sped up, off-kilter work-out that falls in between two-step, carnival funk and early rave, where Boy 8-Bit goes for a more conventional approach, stripping down the track to it's bare elements, changing the structure of the synth line and working a squidgy house groove to perfection.
This one's not going anywhere for a while yet.
