Tim Exile - Listening Tree
Enter Tim Exile, a new signing on Warp Records, who in conjunction with Planet Mu has released his stark new album Listening Tree.
Tim Exile proffers an album that whilst can be described as electro-pop with a dark edge, will most likely be remembered as one of the most distinct albums to be released in 2009. Already with a reputation as somewhat of an electronic maverick from previous releases, Listening Tree marks a giant leap in musical direction for Tim.
In sound, in look, in thought, Tim Exile conjures up a vivid world that is at once medieval and futuristic with gothic sounds and coded lyrics creating shadowy palls of illusion. An album wide in appeal, it at once attracts the likes of hipster indie kids and those with esoteric tastes. Baroque in ambience, Listening Tree draws parallels to the dark synthesised pop tones of early 80's Britain, provided by the likes of Depeche Mode and Cabaret Voltaire.
Exile in name and nature, this revered producer of high intensity avant electronics was brought up in a world of Classical and Baroque music. "I used to love Benjamin Britten and other composers whose work had a slightly more exotic harmony and use of time and cadence that always bluffed your expectations. I also liked early choral music a lot too like Tallis, music that is soaked in a twilight mystery."
Listening Tree is spearheaded by lead single Family Galaxy, already road-tested at media to a fervent and promising reaction. A disorienting kaleidoscope of driving beats and constantly-evolving hypnotic melodies, Family Galaxy switches from the almost-ambient to the entirely manic in seconds.
In a typically elusive way Tim explains the concept behind the single - "Family Galaxy is about the constant process of change that underpins everything. It's a tale from a thingless world where nothing stays the same. As 'now' shines its shifting shades on 'then', so our ideas of what we have done and will do continually morph."
With regards to his live performance Tim has always been different. Clocking up an impressive amount of time perfecting his live setup, and billed alongside artists as diverse as Hot Chip, The Bug, Gruff Rhys and Autechre, the finished product is quite astounding. A versatile producer with an intimidating set up of machinery, with layers upon layers of programmed algorithms allowing him to manipulate anything and everything in real time, songs are improvised and morphed until they have been taken to an entirely new and exciting plain.
Fothcoming Album Showcase Dates:
17th April 2009 / London / Ether Festival, Southbank (supporting Mouse on Mars)
In his spare time he recently remixed a Baroque orchestra - live on stage - "There were a few winces of angina when I dropped a 4-to-the-floor 909 over some dainty violin trills.
So Tim Exile presents Listening Tree, a place riddled with ideas, grappling with the deeper forces at work within the world. A place where algorithmically created sounds sit happily alongside catchy choruses, a place unknown of bold and shining orientation.
