Visionary Underground - Fired Up

Visionary Underground is a live Drum 'n' Bass/Breakbeat band from London, incorporating
powerful and cutting edge audiovisual imagery into their shows.

At VU's core, DJ Feelfree's distinctive, driving beats are laced with UK hip hop, ragga, soul, duband Asian flavas and accompanied by VJ Coco's vibrant and interactive visuals. Singer Damion Mulrain's soaring vocals are a perfect counterpoint to the fluid delivery of rapper Duane Flames. Collectively, they ably demonstrate that they have a finger on the pulse of the nation's soul. Their live performances, delivered with energy and passion, are underpinned by the mighty, melodic basslines of Dr Das (founder member of Asian Dub Foundation).

Their debut album Keep The Grime On involved several collaborators, but VU's new album Fired Up reverts to the more traditional format of primarily featuring band members. This is an altogether more urgent affair, both musically and lyrically, reflecting the escalating problems in an urban environment.

DJ Feelfree's production is tough and tight, with phat kick drums, caustic synth lines, and snares that cut like a knife. Dr Das riffs some of his most militant and challenging basslines to date. Indian vocalist Sonia Mehta makes a welcome return on Voices and The Power, and visionary vocalist/commentator Yap of Pink Punk appears on The Message. Singer Damion's distinctive soaring vocals express rootsy and gritty vocal styles. Rapper Duane Flames brings a contemporary flow in from the street, which is delivered in rapid fire style. With their conscious and incisive lyrics, the two vocalists express the nation's concerns without resorting to preaching. Such as on the following tracks from Fired Up:
