Stonesthrow Records is predominantly known as one of the leading independent hip hop labels in the US, with artists on their roster including Madlib, Guilty Simpson, J Dilla and DOOM. Like most labels, however, Stonesthrow have spread the roots of their label a little further in recent years, looking for artists with a similar mind-set, not a similar sound. Not only does this appeal to their marketing minds, it adds diversity to their catalogue and makes for more interesting conversations about future collaborations between acts.
Aloe Blacc is such a signing. Soul singer through and through, when we found a video of Aloe performing the track I Need A Dollar live in the studio, we watched it twice in a row. A pure, fresh slice of modern soul.
