Founder of the Demigodz crew and onetime member of Vinnie Paz’ Army Of The Pharaohs supergroup, Connecticut emcee Apathy has successfully overcome mistreatment by a major label early in his career and established himself as a major player on the US underground. Now preparing to release Honkey Kong, his third full-length solo album, the fact that his cast of producers includes DJ Premier, DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), Da Beatminerz and Evidence (Dilated Peoples) just goes to show that you don’t need big bucks and fat cats behind you to work with the best.
The newest track to surface from the album is Check To Check, and it reflects on the cash-strapped life of an independent hip hop artist. The beat is by Evidence, and is a typically plush sounding three-and-a-half minutes of lazily rolling drums and pensive melodies. Apathy proves why he’s got to where he has, delivering punchlines – “I’m living check to check, but I ain’t talking Nikes, I’m leaking money like BP with oil pipes” – alongside less flippant sentiments – “it’s funny how it makes you feel like you ain’t a man, trying to justify why you making payment plans. I never made it ‘cos I never tried to make you dance, I’m making ends meet while Diddy’s making bands.
Keep an eye out for Honkey Kong when it drops in August, it should be among the best releases of the year.
