REVIEW: Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

Arcade Fire

As much as Arcade Fire are experts of the subtle touch, they are equally prone to grandiose gestures in their artistic vision. With the release of the title track from this year’s stunning third album, The Suburbs, that side of their personality is on full display.

Directed by the legendary Spike Jones, the video follows a group of young kids living in an anonymous suburbia, passing their time with BMX bikes and bb guns. It soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems, however, as military helicopters, wire fences and a heavy army presence infiltrate the scenes of innocent childhood hi-jinx. Drama unfolds as the friendship group is torn apart by tensions that remain partially, if not wholly, hidden from the viewer.

It’s a compelling and highly cinematic watch, and it comes as no surprise to learn that it is taken from a larger work by Arcade Fire and Spike Jones entitled Scenes From The Suburbs. Details about the project are scant, but watch this space for updates!
