Hailing from Detroit, home of the legendary and sorely-missed hip-hop pioneer J Dilla, Black Milk first made his name as a producer, working closely with the group of which Dilla used to be a part; Slum Village. But much like the great man, Black Milk’s skills also stretch to MCing, a fact that has seen him become one of independent hip hop’s best-loved and best-known names.
Welcome (Gotta Go) comes from his fourth album, boldly titled Album Of The Year, and is a tense track with typically inventive production and an impressive flow that boasts an ease and inherent self-assuredness that carries echoes of Jay-Z. The video captures Black Milk walking around Detroit, using stop-motion techniques to create slightly a jarring effect that compliments the on-edge atmosphere of the track.
