Boy Better Know

Skepta may be making waves with his new single Rescue Me, but he doesn't stand alone...

With the release of his new single Rescue Me, Skepta is the latest grime MC to make a bid for the big time. Rather than doing it on his own, however, he was keen to stress in a recent interview with I Like Music that he comes as part of his crew, Boy Better Know; “I wouldn't wanna be some big MC by myself. Right now, I'd rather Frisco and Jme could have a word with you, not just me. We're all together and are enjoying it together cos we've been doing it together from the beginning.”

After their previous crew, Meridian, drifted apart, the Adenuga brothers, Skepta and Jme, decided to set up their own. Along with Wiley, the so-called Godfather of Grime, they established Boy Better Know, which has since grown to become one of the most influential grime collectives. While individual members of the crew have made a number of releases, Boy Better Know have yet to release their debut album, which Skepta explains is all part of the masterplan: “2010 is the year that everybody gets themselves a platform. Everyone will be known as an artist in their own right.”

Not that Boy Better Know have been forced to take a backseat as a result; a healthy degree of anticipation for the album has been fostered by the release of the 2009 single Too Many Man, and Goin In, which featured on the soundtrack to recent Brit-flick Shank. With the current chart emphasis on individual MCs, Boy Better Know are ready to fly the flag for the collective.
