Portuguese crew Buraka Som Sistema introduced the world to progressive kuduro – techno mixed with the Angolan dance genre kuduro – with their dancefloor-dominating album Black Diamond back in 2008. We’ve not heard anything quite like it since, so it can only be good news that the crew are now back to deliver our next fix in the shape of their new single Hangover (BaBaBa).
It has all the inimitable hallmarks of BSS’ trademark sound, and particularly noteworthy is the single-syllable chorus chant that on first listen sounds mildly annoying, on second sounds mildly catchy, and by the third will have you shouting along while grinning like a fool. The video is appropriately bombastic, an assortment of film clips painted with luminescent colours and scratched like a record so that people’s movements become jerky and surreal (watch it here).
If this is what Buraka Som Sistema’s Hangovers are like we’ve been drinking the wrong thing.
