Dubstep continues its march towards the mainstream this week with the release of Caspa & Mr Hudson’s collaborative single Love Never Dies (Back For The First Time). The track started out life as an instrumental simply called Back For The First Time, which had been slated for release around this time, but somewhere along the line Caspa took the decision to get his old friend Mr Hudson in to supply a vocal. Having already been play-listed by Radio 1 when it was an instrumental, the new version seems sure to enjoy a lot of airplay.
Some will inevitably accuse Caspa of cynically catering to the mainstream, but the more pragmatic among us will surely recognise that the original track was one of Caspa’s more commercially accessible anyway, and Mr Hudson’s addition simply allows the producer to further explore the potential avenues open to dubstep. With Magnetic Man scoring a top ten hit, and Skream’s new solo album looking like it might house one or two of its own, it’s time to accept that there are many sides to dubstep, and that one of them may well be chart-friendly and it needn't detract from the others.
