It’s testament to the constantly evolving world of electronic music that the term ‘dubstep’ now refers to such a wide range of sounds and styles. From the deep textures of Burial or Synkro, the dirtier sounds of Benga or The Bug, all the way to the self-consciously old-school rave-infused tones of Zomby - ‘dubstep’ spans one hell of a musical spectrum.
Into this forest of sounds walk London 3-piece Dark Sky with their Frames EP. The four track EP covers a huge number of musical bases and is released on new label Pictures Music, whose small roster includes Young Montana?, Chairman Kato and Koreless.
Night Light, this week’s Dance Track of The Week, opens with a swirl of hushed atmospherics before bursting into life with a thick but minimal bass part, a shuffling 2-step beat and a skittering deluge of synths. As the track progresses we have references to early grime side by side with hip hop hand-claps, all tied together by a melodic line that shimmies its way into your head and under your skin.
It’s dubstep Jim, but not as we know it.
