Live videos rarely bring much to the table. There’s only so much footage of sweaty moshers (usually shot through a fish-eye lens) that you can take. Something about Deftones’ new video for Beauty School bucks that trend though. For a start there’s the eerie majesty of the song itself, its languorous melodies and half-time chorus perfectly suited to slow-mo shots of seas of bodies seething under flashing lights. Then there’s the energy with which the band, and in particular Chino Moreno, perform. It’s hard not to get a twinge of excitement when you see Moreno backflip into the crowd’s waiting arms, or bend double with exertion as he tears into the chorus. Most of all though, it’s the clips of the band hanging out backstage that makes the video worthwhile. Unremarkable footage in itself, that it shows one of the greatest alternative metal bands of the last two decades still enjoying playing and being with each other is value enough. Having not only outlasted so many of their peers, but also released a career-topping album in 2010’s epic Diamond Eyes it’s good to know that they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
