REVIEW: Dominique Young Unique - Follow The Leader

Dominique Young Unique

Dominique Young Unique is on the verge of big things. The Tampa Bay rapper has been writing rhymes since she was 11, but claims she only started taking it seriously at 12. Slack. Now 19, she’s spent the last couple of years building herself a reputation on an ever wider scale as a force to be reckoned with. Matching her double-time flow and in-your-face lyrics with the hyperactive beats and bass of producer David Alexander (best known for work with Yo Majesty), DYU makes artists like MIA and Santigold seem shy and retiring.

Taken from her latest mixtape Glamorous Touch – which you can download for free here – her new video for Follow The Leader is a perfect introduction to DYU for those who’ve yet to come across her. Flitting from filthy bass and minimal beats to a huge chorus of sparkling synths, harmonised vocals and a massive groove, the track perfectly encapsulates her ability to rhyme over dutty riddims that morph seamlessly into dancefloor pop. Equally, the simple but eye-catching video does well to focus almost exclusively on the rapper herself, whose mesmerising screen presence see-saws from sweet smiles to sassy attitude and back again throughout the track.

Infinitely listenable and infinitely watchable, surely she can’t stay under the radar for much longer.
