Best known as part of the legendary West Coast crew Dilated Peoples, Evidence released his debut solo album The Weatherman LP in 2007, demonstrating beyond doubt his ability to thrive as an individual artist as well as part of a collective. Recently signed to Rhymesayers Entertainment, a veritable treasure trove of non-mainstream hip hop talent including MF DOOM and Brother Ali, he is now set to release new album Cats & Dogs, from which comes To Be Continued…
Evidence’s characteristic drawl seeps into the gaps of a track built from pensive brass samples and a sparse, unhurried beat. After the first verse short spoken tracts vie for space as they get the cut n scratch treatment before Evidence comes back in again to finish what he’s started. The accompanying video shows the rapper delivering his piece while riding a rollercoaster, which is either an extended visual metaphor for a turbulent period in his life, or just a good excuse to hit the fairground and charge it to the record label. With things going so well for EV, it seems much more likely to be the latter. Well, you can’t blame the lad.
