As a punk band, that Fucked Up like to break rules and flout convention is unsurprising. It’s the way in which they do it that raises an eyebrow. Their much-loved second album, The Chemistry Of Common Life, is probably the only punk album ever to have opened with a flute solo, for example. But such frivolous unconventionality will seem peanuts when considered in the light of their forthcoming third album, David Comes To Life, over 70 minutes of punk-rock opera divided into eighteen tracks and four acts.
The band have been releasing tasters ahead of the album – possibly in part to reassure their fans that they’re still loud and proud – the fourth and final instalment of which is Queen Of Hearts. The second track on the album (or ‘act one, scene two’ perhaps), the song takes place outside the factory where the lead character David works, and sees sparks fly as he meets Veronica, a left-wing activist. Pink Eye voices David, and the band’s bassist Mustard Gas voices Veronica, and as you can hear below it’s as raucous and anthemic as Fucked Up have ever been. You can read the opera’s plot, download three other free tracks here, and read the band’s explanation of the project on www.davidcomestolife.com.
