In 2003 the most unique metal band of a generation released their debut album. The band was SikTh, and the album was The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out, Wait For Something Wild. The riffs veered from brutal to absurdly intricate, the percussion from pummelling to polyrhythmic complexity, and the vocals from guttural roars to soaring harmonies with everything in between. Three years later Death Of A Dead Day arrived, every bit as ferocious, every bit as melodious, every bit as genius. Then, one year later, dual vocalists Mikee Goodman and Justin Hill left the band, and silence fell.
In the intervening period various of the band’s members have been involved in various projects, none of which have managed to completely recapture the magic of their joint venture. Until, that is, in the last few weeks the world was introduced to Aliases, the new band from SikTh guitarist Pin. The schizophrenic riffs are present, as is the delicate balance between melody and heaviness and between complexity and simplicity. There is, it must be acknowledged, a striking resemblance between Sikth and Aliases, which may make some fans of the former uncomfortable. However, the untimely demise of SikTh left an unwelcome void in the metal world; a void that Aliases are here to fill. We say bring it on.
