We’ll get the first fact out the way nice and early. K-OS appears with Hollywood poster boy Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker...) in his new video for Zambony, the opening track to his acclaimed fourth album Yes!, which was released in April 2009.
Though we don’t get to see K-OS training for Jedi knight status (side note for Star Wars fans – ‘The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force’ by Daniel Wallace - a reference book on the Jedi Order and its history – will be released September 28, 2010) er...we do get to see K-OS melt his ragga-root tinged rap across an epic backing of operatic swirl and rich strings, sinking into a gradual build of thick synth. Though it’s a bit of a shame that K-OS chooses singing to a crying girl over a game of ice-hockey-whilst-rapping at the end of the video, we’re still un-deterred from the talents of the Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter and producer.
With an output focused on positivity, alongside and understandable concern regarding the attitude of mainstream hip hop and it’s obsession with bling n bitches, K-OS makes music firstly for himself, secondly for others. Putting his own passion in the spotlight has helped keep his output fresh, deterring a reliance upon standard hip hop conventions. His 2002 debut album Exit swept the board with critical acclaim both in his home country Canada and beyond. His freestyle on the Chemical Brothers track Get Yourself High scored a 2005 Grammy nomination and he’s notched up a hefty load of music awards. Look out for the soon to be released Anchorman Mixtape, which will feature leftover tracks from Yes! as well as new material - www.k-osmusic.com.
