In the mid to late 80s Techno was born in Detroit. Melting electronica derived from pioneering European acts such as Kraftwerk, with the funk from Parliament, the Chicago House scene and a hefty sweep of fictional futuristic imagery, this weighty slice of dance music began to spread with a pre-occupation toward the transference of the bodily spirit to the machine...
With a UK identity for techno established amongst more mainstream audiences as Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit was released in 1988, the synthetic sound spread, moving hand in hand with the development of clubbing culture. Germany paralleled this development, with illegal party venues and free underground techno raves exploding following the fall of the Berlin wall on November 9th 1989.
Though the primary techno venues in Germany centred themselves in Berlin (Planet, Der Bunker and Tresnor), the party scene naturally spread further afield. Cue the 1993 opening of Delirium, a techno record store in Cologne. In 1998 Delirium became Kompakt - combining several existing labels, the record store, distributor and party organisers.
Kompakt has since gone on to make a huge impact upon electronic music, more recently fusing elements of trance into minimal techno. It's history is well documented in its popular annual compilation the Total series, featuring exclusives from the biggest Kompakt artists, promising new comers and the latest Kompakt vinyl releases. Total 1 was released in 1999 and now....Total 11 has arrived.
