Bea's of Bloomsbury

Cupcakes are not only limited to the realms of flour, butter and sugar icing, oh no, they’ve gracefully entered the world of fashion, falling wonderfully in line with kitsch, vintage trends. Inspired by Katy Perry’s cupcake bra and Judith Lieber’s designer Cupcake Purse, we have come to the conclusion that the bakery incarnation of pop music is the highly decorated cupcake.

Sweet and perfectly formed, just like our favourite pop tunes, we’ve seen marvellous and fancy cupcake stalls popping up at festivals all over the place this summer! Not only are they a wonderful, colourful alternative to a rather dull portion of chips, they are clearly the ultimate summer-time, pop festival, mouth-watering treat!

We stumbled across Bea’s of Bloomsbury at Field Day 2010...and amongst their wonderful selection of beautiful cakes and treats, we were hypnotised by their cupcakes! Based at 44 Theobald's Road, London, Bea’s host afternoon teas, have a daily lunch menu, produce all manner of cakes and pastries, design and create custom cakes and also run classes and workshops! We’ve taken a look at their rather impressive cupcake menu and matched some of the mouth-watering combos with some tasty pop treats...

Ultimate Chocolate Fudge Cupcake
Belgian chocolate buttermilk cupcake, topped with rich fudge ganache icing
Associate the word Ultimate with pop music, and we’re afraid we have to leave a fair few fair-weather posters behind. For us, ultimate pop music comes in the form of the superstars, the ones that have made the biggest, shiniest, dance-routine based impact with their rich, catchy, sticky pop music: Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera...

Strawberries and Cream Cupcake
A choice of our rich chocolate or vanilla sponge, with vanilla buttercream covered in strawberries
A quintessentially English combination, unfortunately not many pop stars are professional tennis players (though they often appear in the Wimbledon crowds...) But never fear! There's rather a lot of UK pop music that continues to sweeten our day. Our scoop of strawberries and cream are the delightful Girls Aloud, Pixie Lott and Lily Allen.

Passionfruit Vanilla Cupcake
Moist vanilla Sponge topped with a super fruity passionfruit buttercream
The unexpected combinations are often the best, and the same goes for pop! From Cheryl Cole and Will.I.Am, Lily Allen and Professor Green to the Sugababes vs. Girls Aloud, head to head fruitiness is more than enough to engage our sweet toothed, toe tapping taste buds!

Carrot Cake Cupcake
Carrot, pecans and coconut. Covered with cream cheese Icing
Ah the healthy (er...sort of) combo. Hand-made, natural and laced with tons of sweetness, Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling and Eliza Doolittle are our Carrot Cake Cupcakes...
