REVIEW: Rusko - Hold On ft Amanda Coffman

Rusko

Amanda Coffman was an unexpected collaborator on dubstep lord Rusko’s long awaited debut album OMG. Known for her work as key vocalist with experimental indie outfit Dirty Projectors, the addition of her hypnotic, honey thick vocal drizzled liberally across the garage tinged dub of Hold On pushed our appreciation of Rusko to new heights.

Vocal dubstep is an art within itself in a genre famed for pushing slowed, rolling bass to the forefront; the balance of sweet, coy, female curves across the grey shadow of a full-on urban stutter is a true skill. Though Rusko submerges OMG into the deep, famed realms of woozy bass wonk-outs, his ability to provide a euphoric lift in the form of full album tracks such as Hold On, not just twenty second pre-drop cursers, allows the album to coast over well know dubstep territories and provide a deep seated listen; they can turn it up in the club or you can roll forward with a pair of good heaphones.

So far, Hold On ft Amber Coffman is the anthem of the summer for I Like Music. Though the track has been championed since Rusko’s OMG first scattered across our piles and piles of ‘must-listen to’ albums in early June, Hold On has remained the shiniest gem amongst a heavily jewelled debut. Remix treatment landed recently in a package featuring a superb remix from UK drum n bass artist Sub Focus.
