Skepta, the self-declared King of Grime, is back with the video for Cross My Heart, the third single to be taken from his forthcoming album Doin’ It Again. Featuring ex-Eastenders actor and fledgling pop star Preeya Kalidas, it’s a self-produced number that combines dramatic strings with an aggressively sparse beat. Add to that bars like “the guy that you’re looking at right now is the guy that I was this morning / I never had a pen but I made a mark / Even when I top the chart I’ll be the same guy that I was at the start / Hope to die I cross my heart,” and it all comes together to make a convincing defence for Skepta’s regal pretensions.
The video is as flashy as one would expect from a man aiming to be to UK grime what Jay-Z is for US hip-hop. There’s a Lamborghini, a grandiose mansion, scantily clad girls aplenty, a purple suit and a hell of a lot of gold. Watch out for the brief cameo from the rest of Boy Better Know towards the end; we’re going to be seing a lot more of them in the near future too.
