‘This is the English slim...’ said Eminem’s DJ, Green Lantern, and yet, Skittles’ second album (due for release this autumn) is still titled Poor with £100 Trainers. Following up his 2007 debut - Two Pints of Brandy and A Packet of Skittles – the Manchester rapper has released prE.P, a free four track sampler of the LP before the full drop.
Skittles (aka 24 year old Liam Kelly) has risen to the top of the scene in Manchester, following his early association with Virus Syndicate and his work as host for MRK1’s grime / dubstep sets across Europe.
prE.P’s opening track Boys In Blue heavily samples Arctic Monkey’s Riot Van, tight production cuts roll beneath Skittle’s speedy spits, drizzled in a thick Mancunian accent. Screeching to a brutal halt mid-way, a thunderstorm collides into our conscious as the story of Johnny’s ‘green by day, white by night life’ turns into full audio-drama.
