Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All have got hip hop in their sights and they’re about to pull the trigger. A little over a year ago Tyler The Creator, the de facto head of the L.A. crew, dropped his debut, self-produced album Bastard. It signalled the beginning of something big. There followed a series of tracks and albums from the various members of the collective, all characterised by the same dark, hazy production and violent, confrontational imagery. Comparisons with Gravediggaz and Wu-Tang Clan have abounded, but the truth is that while OFWGKTA might share the outlook and creativity of those crews, their sound is completely their own.
It’s a fact that Tyler is getting ready to impress upon the world. His second album, Goblin, is going to arrive sometime in April, and from it comes the single Yonkers and its accompanying video. The black and white clip is typically twisted, starting with Tyler toying with a cockroach and ending with him hanging himself, staring down the camera in the intervening period with an unhinged intensity impossible to ignore. His deep bass flow trips and skips over characteristically uncompromising verses containing the kind of heavy lines that he’s become known for: “Jesus called, he said he’s sick of the disses. I told him to quit bitchin, this isn’t a fucking hotline for a fucking shrink, sheesh I already got mine and he’s not fucking working, I think I’m wasting my damn time!”
Sit up and pay attention, Odd Future are going to change the game.
