Australia’s Violent Soho follow in the footsteps of their fellow countrymen The Vines in producing raucous rock with a heavy nod to the grunge movement of the late eighties and early nineties. Since 2004 they’ve been busy making a name for themselves down under, finally coming to the attention of Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, who singed them to his record label. The time has come for them to bring the noise to the rest of the world, which they do with the release of the single Jesus Stole My Girlfriend.
Kicking off with a quiet/loud intro worthy of the Pixies, things quickly progress to a no-nonsense chorus that thrashes between power chords as singer Luke Boerdam rasps his lament, “Jesus stole my girlfriend.” From here on in it continues in the mould of a straightforward blast of good old fashioned ‘90s grunge-rock. Magnificent in its simplicity, it’s sure to lodge itself in your head for a long time to come.
