Warp Films are the sister company to Warp Records - the highly acclaimed independent record label home to world renowned and ground breaking acts including Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre, Flying Lotus, Plaid and Tyondai Braxton (of Battles) - all of whom create a variety of mind bending, expertly crafted, wholesomely devouring, experimental music - with a predominant lean and fuzz injected soft spot toward everything electronic.
Here at I Like Music our only foray into the wonderful world of film typically arrives in the form of a music video, film soundtrack or occasional interview with a film score composer.
Trush Humpers is none of those. It's relation to music only surfaces via its lo-fi spirit; sets from 'trashy' live acts followed its VHS screenings on daisy-chained 'trashy' TV sets up and down the UK this August, while it's nine track soundtrack (featuring track titles including Chitshit, Kitchen Strangulation and You Girls Just Suck Large Fat Penis) runs just under fifteen minutes and was released by Drag City on a limited 500 copy 7" with record sleeves hand-filthed and signed by Director Harmony Korine.
Harmony Korine is best known for his independent films Kids (1995), Gummo (1997) and Julien Donkey-Boy (1999). Trash Humpers takes a dive into the deepest of extremes as it follows a small group of twisted, sociopathic elderly people in Nashville, Tennessee. Visually, the film mimicks an over-watched VHS. Accidental narrative twists amongst consistent and painful injections of embarrassed voyeurism and wide eyed fascination - a combination hard to come across in a world of youtube and 24/7 online porn.
Brutal, grotesque, violent and gut wrenching scenes meld with a perverse beauty that questions our position as viewers, both in terms of our own limitations and our need to justify, narrate and understand others. Literal trash humping, over-sexualised OAPs, cackles, screams and washing-up liquid smothered pancakes, this provoking creation lives up to the warp mentality mentioned above; mind bending, expertly crafted, wholesomely devouring and extremely experimental.
