Skins Music Supervisor Chats To ilikemusic

Skins

Skins needs little introduction. Fans of the show are currently waiting for the third series of the BAFTA award winning, British teen drama to be aired on Channel 4. Skins follows the lives of a group of teenagers in a frank, honest, intriguing and charming way. Unafraid to fully immerse itself in the issues surrounding most teenagers Skins has won critical acclaim for its no holds barred portrayal of teenage life, covering everything from debaucherous neon parties to the intricacies of the heart.

Co-created by father and son combo, Bryan Elsley and Jamie Britton, Skins prides itself not only on its excellently written script, its well produced episodes and the top notch acting ability of its cast members, but, of course, its music. Watch through any episode of the award winning drama and you'll notice that its soundtrack references a whole host of great music - from the freshest, new rising talents to the bona fide classics.

For Series 3, Skins Music Supervisor Alex Hancock is giving fans the opportunity to 'Get Your Music In Skins'. The only rule, that the music submitted must be original. ilikemusic caught up with Alex to find out exactly what his job entails, how he goes about choosing the songs and what we can expect from Series 3.

ILM: In brief, what does your job entail?

Alex: I sit down with the bosses of the show and watch episodes without music. Initially, it is a case of working out what needs music, for example, "This needs this kind of song." And then we'll talk through some ideas, and I'll have some things in mind, but usually, I'll have to go away and do some research. There is a lot of stuff to go through and we try out a lot of different approaches. Quite often a track that you try won't be quite right. So it becomes a case of sitting there and trying to identify the problem.

ILM: For series 3 you have invited people to send in their music. What has the response been like?

Alex: Thousands have been sent in, and as a result the quality varies. I spent all of Tuesday, from about 9 in the morning to half six just going through them and I'm still nowhere near completing it! There are some OK things that will get in there, it'll be good.
