DELS is one of the most interesting emcees working in the UK right now. While his flow in isolation may not immediately mark him out as being particularly out of the ordinary, scratch below the surface of his patient, uncluttered and unhurried delivery and the intelligence of his lyrics shines through. Combined with his unique-sounding productions – all bubbling electronic grooves and bursts of mechanical noise – it’s little wonder that his first two singles, Shapeshifting and Trumpalump, have attracted so much praise and attention.
GOB is the final single to be released before his debut album lands on May 9th, and it is a statement of the fierce individuality that has become core to DELS’ identity. Recounting how he has carved out a path of his own, GOB builds in intensity until it reaches an epic climax of layered vocals, supplied by label-mate Elan Tamara, over which DELS repeats the mantra “I won’t get swallowed by the darkness, I won’t get swallowed by the fog.” For the video DELS uses his skills as an artist and graphic designer to create a simple and stark set of visuals that mirror the mood of the track.
A fascinating new talent, that DELS has already established such a strong aesthetic for himself bodes very well for the future.
