When Australian duo Xavier Bacash and Lionel Towers decided to move their electro-pop outfit Gypsy & The Cat to London in 2010 they brought with them a small piece of the eternal summer that Neighbours and Home & Away reliably inform us our antipodean cousins enjoy. There is no such thing as the winter blues in Australia, because there is no such thing as winter. Instead of wasting six months moping around in slippers and drinking copious cups of tea, the folks down under make music about being warm and happy all year round.
Mildly racist caricatures aside, Gypsy & The Cat are indeed experts at conjuring up carefree summer anthems, much like their forthcoming single Time To Wander. A simple, resounding drum beat provides the song’s backbone, over which float soft synth sounds, gentle arpeggios and an airy falsetto vocal. There’s a grab-for-the-sky chorus thrown into the equation to provide the sing-along moments, but the track is predominantly about lingering chords and unresolved melodies coming together to create that nostalgia-for-the-present, let-this-moment-last-forever feeling with which their fellow countrymen Empire Of The Sun seduced us back in 2008.
What with the English sun poised to put his proverbial hat on, Gypsy & The Cat are a perfect candidate to provide the soundtrack.
