Keeping It Peel: John Peel Day 2006
Today is the second John Peel Day - Thursday October 12th 2006, marking exactly two years since the DJ's last Radio 1 show. Last year saw hundreds of gigs in tribute to John Peel for the first mark of a man who meant so much to the music industry. And this year, the day will again be a celebration of John's life and massive contribution to music/broadcasting with as many venues as possible staging gigs across the UK under the banner of Peel Day.
Last year, New Order headlined a tribute gig to John on the eve of John Peel Day, while Sir Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, David Gilmour and Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks performed at the Royal Albert Hall last year for a John Peel Tribute Concert.
This year, on the second John Peel Day, Radio 1 will be Keeping It Peel by staging a very special show as part of their Electric Proms. John Peel Night on Thursday 26 October will see The Raconteurs, Squarepusher and The Horrors perform at the Electric Ballroom, Camden, London.
The much-loved Radio 1 DJ passed away on October 25 2004 last year whilst on holiday in Peru with his wife Sheila, a huge loss to his family, the music industry and those who knew and loved him. He will always be remembered and John Peel Day is testament to that.
