Reverend And The Makers - Jon McClure's Blog on the state of things in the music industry

Anyway we have been busy, not least abroad. Its only when you see what you're not when you can define what it is that makes you what you are. So being abroad made me realise amongst other things how culturally arrogant we British are. Our expectations that others will speak our mother tongue means we are viewed in less then positive terms by many. Rightly so. Well the world doesn't = Britain and Britain doesn't = London.

It struck me that it's not the language that divides us from Europe but our mentality. We are so used to bein bullshitted it seems from the government selling us lies about weapons of mass destruction down to the media instructing us on what's cool and what's not that we have become an image obsessed bunch of cynics unwilling or unable to differentiate the genuine from the fakes. In the war of truth vs. marketing, marketing has prevailed.

To be a dissenting voice and to speak the truth means the risk of aliention. the choices for me as a musician are stark. Play the game, refuse to state the truth in my lyrics and interviews and have commercial success or stick to my guns and risk being ostracised! The concept of cool as dictated from above is almost fascist in so much as it implies there are uncool people somewhere, an inferior race almost.
