The Charlatans Biography

Martin: "It's relentless, which I like and it's got a really swagger… like the Bee Gees' 'Jive Talking'."

3. For Your Entertainment

Tim: "It's Ska and jazz. I think the drumming's amazing on that. It's unique. It's ska but… I dunno".

4. Dead Man's Eye

Martin: "I've always liked songs with a touch of spite. Sounds like pop but there's something going on underneath. It's like 'Scarface' or 'Taxi Driver'."

5. Muddy Ground

Martin: "Tony's voice works really well with Tim's and short of getting a Russian choir on there… just multi-layered the vocal. Also it's got a monster groove."

6. City Of The Dead

Martin: "City Of The Dead is a bit ska- y, like Tim listening to the first Specials records. I really like the low things that Tim does the ooohs and the aaaahs.
There's a bit of John Barry 'Ipcress File' on there."

7. Road To Paradise

Martin: "If you've got to walk the walk you've got to talk the talk. Put a backbeat on it. Originally there was an Orbital sample but we wanted it to sound like us. It's got a great sparse feeling to it. We took out a load of stuff to give it a great feel. Jim said to us it's not what you put in, it's what you leave out. And he was right! 'Road to Paradise' sounds like the Charlatans in the 21st Century - you've got to keep the group moving forward."
