Three Blind Wolves @ Ginglik 17/03/2011
The latest signing to Communion Records, Three Blind Wolves are set to be the word on everybody's lips in the new-folk scene. After checking them out at Ginglik on a tour to promote their debut mini-album Sound Of The Storm, it's easy to see (or hear) why.
With a set ranging from the country heavy Emily Rose to the rock 'n' roll rumblings of Honey Fire, you would be forgiven for finding it difficult to restrict Three Blind Wolves' sound to anything other than the broad term “alternative folk.” The raw passion behind Ross Clark's whiskey-warm vocals backed with harmonious howling from his fellow Wolves, adds to the effect of lyrical ferocity and soulful song-craft already in place.
The progressive, genre-shifting nature of the band's sound makes for a compelling performance, executed with an honest confidence in their own musicianship. In Here Somewhere perhaps best sums up the Wolves' talent; Davie Cleary swaps guitar for mandolin, while an a cappella break down shows off bittersweet four part harmonies, so tight you have to hold your breath.
All too soon, the band finish on crowd-favourite Sex Is For Losers. Ross leaps from the stage into the audience for one final rip roaring riff, while Matt Woodward from support act Billy Vincent joins the band, making a fiddle sing with the soul of a rock guitar. When every last ounce of the group's energy is spent, Ross breathes a quiet “thank you” before the night is over. Leaving the crowd hungry for more, Three Blind Wolves tonight proved themselves as fiercely talented musicians – sign us up to the wolf pack.
