Peter Gabriel, Saturday headliner and co-founder of WOMAD, billed his set as a fundraiser for Witness, the human rights charity that the singer founded in 1992. Opening his set with a cover of Paul Simon's Boy In The Bubble, he annoucned that he would only duplicate 3 songs from his 2007 WOMAD setlist. Though the audience were denied bigger hits such as Don't Give Up and Sledgehammer, tracks Steam and No Self Control made adequate room for a foot stomping funk out, both accompanied by visuals that streched the entire width of the stage. The set came to a close with the anti-apartheid track Biko, which Gabriel movingly dedicated to Natalia Estemirova, the Chechen activist murdered on the 15th July 2009.
Following Gabriel, human beatboxing champ Shlomo headed up his own Vocal Orchestra which left the audience spellbound. Joined on stage by seven other vocalists and beatboxers, their energetic, experimental set included an improvised track, renditions of well known songs, a beatbox-off between Shlomo and World Female Beatboxing champion Bellatrix and harmonies, vocals, beats and basslines, all produced by the human mouth.
WOMAD festival programmer Paula Henderson recently told I Like Music that she was already underway with her line-up plans for 2010. Once again WOMAD 2009 fulfilled its quest to celebrate and introduce world music and culture to wider audiences. Having attended the second ever WOMAD festival, WOMAD veteran Julie Burrow told I Like Music she was pleased with the changes and developments across the years:
"I was at the second ever WOMAD! I've not missed many since. I can remember more psychedelic art and decorations back then, but I'm not too worried about that now. I come for the music and the atmosphere. Where else do you get an atmosphere like this? WOMAD has introduced me to so many fantastic artists over the years. I can't afford to travel to see them, so I come here! And yes, I'll be coming back next year!"page << 1 2 3 4 >>
