Hard-rocking Leeds trio Dinosaur Pile Up arrive in style to Guest Edit I Like Music, celebrating the release of their new album Growing Pains. The band talk us through their favourite track, album and video, cook up a twenty track playlist, and introduce their other major love besides music; skateboarding.
Track
Artist: Kings Of Leon Track: Radioactive Release: Out Now Label: RCA Record Label
Right, I know we're a 'cool' rock band and all, but listening to the radio there doesn't seem a great deal that really stands out for us. There's some great non-rock stuff around like Magnetic Man and Bombay Bicycle Club but loud guitars ain't happening at the moment!
That said, Radioactive by Kings of Leon is a great new track. It seems a million miles away from the pomposity of Sex on Fire and a bit more of a return to when they were beardy and dirty. Kind of reminds me of Springsteen or something with a great chorus. I know we'll be bored of it in about 3 days but right now - it's a current song that has guitars in and we don't hate it!
Album
Artist: Deftones Album: Diamond Eyes Release: Out Now Label:Warner Bros
We're all pretty obsessed with Deftones at the moment. It's hard to pick out what, in particular, we all love about them - I think something to do with the heavy guitars juxtaposed with amazing vocal melodies. That's something we try and do with our band definitely, although when Deftones get heavy they get HEAVY!
I think whatever mood we're in we can find a Deftones track to suit that mood, whether we're tired after a show or driving to play a show we're particularly looking forward to, although it's strange how people still lump them in with the whole nu-metal thing - they're a whole total other beast, so much more mature than all that stuff. Plus the lyrics are so incredible, Chino is still a cool, cool guy after six records.
Video
Artist: OK Go Track: White Knuckles Release: Out Now Label: Capitol/EMI
It's a fun video and it obviously took a lot of work. We like the way it's all for a good cause (RSPCA) and every time you watch it you notice something different and funny. OK Go always do rad videos come to think about it, right? Like the one on the treadmills? Amazing! They're a fun band, good tunes - nothing too deep or whatever, I imagine they'd be a great party band - although none of us have seen them play live, plus something we find admirable is that they're not taking themselves too seriously - that's an attitude that's definitely lacking in modern guitar music - playing guitar with your friends is supposed to be fun! Smile a bit!!
Skateboarding
Ok so this is the perfect opportunity to mention that not only is our second love (after rocking the hell out) skateboarding, we all collect boards and books and photos and videos of skateboarders, companies and designs we love. We're also looking into creating a limited line of DPU Skateboards! Ok, so that said - just like independent record shops - independent skate shops are also on a massive decline. Thankfully our friends in Leeds have opened a brand new independent skate shop called Welcome. It's run by skaters, which is a good start, and everyone who works there is super friendly and there's always good tunes on too. They sell rad boards and apparel and specialise in smaller, UK-based apparel companies like Palace and Slam City.
