The Qemists

With a storming 20 track playlist in tow, featuring everything that makes them who they are (dnb, breaks, basslines, riffs, mash-ups and speaker shredding chaos), Brighton trio The Qemists have arrived as our next set of Guest Editors. They've recommended a track, album and video that they're into right now...

Track
Artist: The Prototypes Track: Cascade Released: Out Now Label: Infrared

This track has been blowing apart dancefloors in our DJ set all summer. The Prototypes, aka Nick and Garvey, are a relatively new DnB outfit, but their first batch of tunes have wowed everyone, including Subfocus, who has made this track a cornerstone of his set this year. If you’re happy and you know it, dance to this! The sound of the bass alone deserves a paragraph written about it, but we won’t bore you with technical details. Just seek this one out for your record box or MP3 collection, it’ll be bringing back memories of the summer of 2010 for years to come!

Album
Artist: DJ Fresh Album: Kryptonite Released: 16th August 2010 Label: Breakbeat Kaos

If you look up Drum n Bass in the dictionary, you’re sure to see a picture of Dan Stein aka DJ Fresh next to it. Well you probably won’t, we haven’t checked, it might be there, we don’t know! Since almost creating a genre with Bad Company and discovering a little known DnB act we now know as Pendulum (who were first signed to his label, Breakbeat Kaos), Fresh has delivered a multitude of sure-fire hits for the DnB DJ.

With this album Fresh has shown that music for the club can work in the mainstream, with tracks like Hypercaine and Gold Dust (reworked with a vocal for this album) featuring heavily on Radio 1’s main playlists. But it’s not all about the pop, tracks like Talkbox and Heavyweight show that Fresh hasn’t forgotten about us DJ’s – you could press play on this album at a DJ show and leave it playing til the end!

Video
Artist: Toddla T Track: Sky Surfing ft Wayne Marshall Released: 23rd August 2010 Label: Ninja Tune

Lolz @ Toddla for this completely over the top video! There is something deeply disturbing about the fake poodle crapping in the street! The Sheffield based superhero / producer has intentionally made a cheap video, probably because he knew the track was so good that he could get away with it!

Toddla is an unlikely looking Dancehall superstar, but he is surely set for world domination with his Radio 1 show, his super slick production, and the informative Toddla TV which sees Tom travelling around the world doing crazy stuff! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Toddla Man!!!
