Toddla T

Yooow … hello www world … it's Toddla T from the Steel City and I'm on a guest edit ting! For those that don't know about me, I'm a DJ, Producer & Radio Broadcaster. I have a radio show on BBC Radio 1, I'm signed to Ninja Tune and you can catch me anywhere from Glasgow to Grenada on the weekend but for more info on all that jazz go to www.toddlat.com. I got some brand new music to show you and we dip into the past for some classics that are totally relevant today… lets gooooo…

Track
Artist: Kleeer Track: Tonight Release: 1984 Label: Atlantic

I was -1 (minus 1!) when this record was made but it sounds like it was made yesterday! I was about 18 or 19 when I first heard it. I was going out with this girl at the time, and my friend was going out with another girl and they both lived together. We used to be around their house the whole time and my friend was massively into soul, soulful house, US garage and that end of things. He used to play old stuff as well; soul, funk and boogie. He played this record and I was like “fuck me!” I played it about three times on the trot and I don’t know why or how, but the groove and the swing of the track is just so unbelievable. People try to capture that the whole time, and it’s really hard to get it right. This tune captures that perfectly.

Album
Artist: Common Album: Like Water For Chocolate Release: March 2000 Label: Geffen

Released March 28, 2000, this features some of Jay 'Dilla' Dee's finest work in my opinion. The album also formally marked the formation of the Soulquarians, a collective composed of ?uestlove (of The Roots), Jay Dee (formerly of Slum Village), keyboardist James Poyser, soul artist D'Angelo and bassist Pino Palladino, among numerous other collaborators. The production on this record is simply bliss… it's how an album should run from start to finish, not just a collection of songs. Common delivers, but for me this album is a wicked example of qualilty/consistant production.

Track
Artist: The Pharcyde Track: Drop Release: 1995 Label: Delicious Vinyl

As a teen, I was obsessed with MTV Raps … and this was one video that was not only rinsed but stood out a million miles. Directed by Spike Williams, this is shot with the emcees spitting the track in reverse and walking backwards and played forwards; very ground breaking at the time. Another Dilla production the tune is also siiiiiiiick.
