Urban Nerds

Yes yes I Like Music, Urban Nerds are hyped and ready for this week’s Guest Edit! With the help of our resident DJ crew Rattus Rattus & Klose One, we’ve put together a sick bass heavy play list for you, touching on some of the tunes that have been killing it at our East London warehouse raves this year. We’ve also dropped in a few Nerds classics from way back when the parties kicked off in 2007! Like our nights we wanted to make the takeover eclectic, reflecting the multitude of underground sounds that we’ve championed over the past few years. There’s also a heads up on some of our biggest events of 2010 coming up this Christmas, featuring the mighty David Rodigan and pioneering dubstep legend, Mala. Big up all the Urban Nerds crew and roll on 2011, plenty more raving to be done!

Track
Artist: RackNRuin Track: Territory ft. Navigator & Slarta John Release Out Now Label: Black Butter Records

By James Rompani

One to watch out for in 2011, RackNRuin is doing big things right about now! All in all Territory is everything you could want from a tune at 144bpm; big bouncing bassline, jungle drums and ragga lyrics, a winner every time! It’s clear that this sound is making a big comeback at the moment and RackNRuin provides tight production, with MCs Navigator and Slarta John adding the finishing touches with an acrobatic vocal array that fits the beat perfectly. Big, bad and heavy is the name of the game here, make sure it’s played loud and remember, if it’s nice play it twice!

Album
Artist: Scientist Album: Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space Release: 29th November Label: Tectonic

By James Rompani

Tectonic, one of dubstep’s most prolific labels has teamed up with Scientist, the legendary dub producer from Jamaica, to provide an amazing reworking of 12 original dubstep tunes from the scenes crème de la crème. Easily considered a future milestone within the realms of dubstep’s relatively brief history, this album infuses the two elements of dubstep and dub to great new heights, taking original tunes from RSD, Mala and Tectonic label boss Pinch, and adding Scientist’s own touch of alchemy. This album is a must have for all serious lovers of deep, atmospheric, body bopping beats, bass and blips. One for all the real heads out there.

Video
Artist: Jamie Woon Track: Night Air Release: Out Now Label: Candent Songs

By James Benenson

Like fellow Brit School graduate, Katy B, Jamie Woon looks set to switch up the sound of underground London with a truly inspiring, unique vocal flare. Where as Katy’s powerful yet soulful touch makes her the queen of club fuelled, big room dubstep, Jamie Woon on the other hand has managed to woo the likes of Burial and Ramadanman (check his Night Air refix on the Urban Nerds playlist this week), with stunning, haunting lyricism that lends itself beautifully to labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio. With dubstep expanding into ever varied sub genres, Woon is the perfect accompaniment to the dark, experimental and progressive dub, techno and halfstep realms of the scene, as well as a brilliant solo artist in his own right. This thoughtful video for Night Air, directed by Lorenzo Fonda just dropped. Stay locked; next year is Woon’s time for sure!

Roller Express

By James Benenson

Roller Express used to mean dodgy suburban clubs, donning a pair of skates and circling drab discos to the tune of cringe worthy 70s cheese and club classics. Not any more!

We’re on about the freshest UK production outfit on the block and the dynamic duo that is Toddla T and Redlight. Together with their fire-tongued MCs, Serocee and Dread, the past few months have seen the pair make camp in a West London studio to bang out a string of bass heavy, electro anthems and remixes under the mighty new moniker, Roller Express!

Individually they’ve both been making waves on the underground circuit for a while now, with Toddla T holding down a coveted BBC Radio 1 ‘In New DJs We Trust’ show, pushing an eclectic mash of dubstep, dancehall, house and garage infused riddims to the nation every month, with his own Sheffield touch. He’s also put out a Fabriclive mix CD, his own acclaimed Skanky Skanky album and worked with a heap of talent including Roots Manuva, Roisin Murphy and Tinchy Stryder, to name a few.

Heralding from Bristol, Redlight’s been joining the gap between dubstep and drum & bass with his own unique sound that’s influenced by his roots playing D&B as DJ Clipz, resulting in dirty basslines and dark synth filled tracks that give a nod to old skool jungle but with that distinct Redlight touch. His summer smash on Chase & Status’ MTA Records What You Talking About saw him collaborate with Ms Dynamite and is a banging example, not to mention several club bangers including Stupid and remixes for the likes Magnetic Man and Kano which have earned him the support of Skream, Annie Mac, Shy FX and a whole load more!

Together, these two exceptional producers are hitting it hard as nails, already having remixed the likes of Wiley and Labrinth in a big way! After a huge set at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival and the debut Roller Express tour taking in some of the UK’s sickest nightspots, including Motion in Bristol, Stealth in Nottingham and Stylus in Leeds with giant promotion outfit, Wax:On, we’re sure they’re gonna blow big time in 2011!
