Hip Hop Editors Choice: A Complete Introduction To Sugar Hill Records
This is where it all started... Hip hop's original label, Sugar Hill Records, releases a full introduction to their earliest output.
In 1979 a genre that had previously been the preserve of New York's black community gained a national platform with the release of the Sugar Hill Gang single Rapper's Delight. Though rapping as a practice had been popular for many years prior to the release, there had been a general reluctance amongst those doing it to enter a recording studio, and as such it hadn't penetrated popular culture outside the projects of NY. Rapper's Delight changed that forever, a landmark step on a journey that has seen hip hop become one of the world's most popular and profitable genres. The label that made that process possible was Sugar Hill Records, whose release of Rapper's Delight marked them out as a central protagonist in the fledgling movement.
Just over forty years since that revolution began comes the release of The Complete Introduction To Sugar Hill Records. The four CD box-set charts hip-hop's earliest years, gathering together the singles from its pioneering artists, released on its pioneering label.
As well as a comprehensive collection of music, the release also includes liner notes and photographs that tell the story of hip hop as it unfolded, from the singles themselves to the culture that surrounded and gave birth to them. It's a vital acquisition for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of hip hop on a musical and intellectual level.
