Devlin is about to go global. Making his first radio appearance at the age of 13, the 21-yr-old has been steadily building a name for himself as an emcee of particular lyrical virtuosity ever since. Now signed to Island records, he's ready to capitalise on that groundwork with the release of his debut album Bud, Sweat & Beers.

Brainwashed is the first official single from the album, and it's a statement of serious intent. "Neurological science, I'll leave your brain-cells rewired. My name's Devlin, I'm just trying to gain entry to your mind." He spits these lines over a tense backing track, whose skittering treble line gives way to an epic chorus that wouldn't feel out of place on a Jay-Z album.

The video that accompanies the track is a straightforward illustration of Devlin's ambition. A home video camera films him as he raps in a bare room, while a team of masked men travel around London under the cover of night, projecting the transmission onto the sides of buildings throughout the city. Members of the public are left speechless by the sight, as they no doubt will be when the album drops in August 2010.
