Stig (of the dump) & Dr. Syntax - Live @ SOUL CELLAR, Southampton 10th April 2008

Live Review by G SMOKE

It was a Thursday Spring evening and Stig and Dr Syntax were on the flyer. My +1 and I arrived at Southampton's Soul Cellar and noticed our fellow attendees dining and drinking. "This ain't very ghetto," remarked +1.

Still, after a cider and outside smoke we noticed the downstairs bar area sufficiently filling up and, the subsequent arrival of Southampton's finest hip hop DJ, Disgo Dan, dropping some phat instrumentals, took the underground ghetto vibe up a notch.

An open mic session followed downstairs - an invitation for a few South Coast MCs to step up and warm up punters for the main event, lifting the room to a higher level. Cranking up the degree of enjoyment, Southampton MCs impressed (some more than others) and +1 and I were well and truly into the vibe.

That vibe ascended further as I climbed the stairs to the freshly opened top floor. It was buzzing. Joel B entertained on the decks and the Soul Cellar kicked off. Three figures then appeared on stage and truly rocked the joint: C Monts & Twisted Link - highly recommended and super cool. Kicking off with an a cappella of Alex Language and ending with You Know How I Feel - boom, the show cranked up another level and Southampton's Soul Cellar was now jumping.
