ILM: Do you have any advice for those young bedroom producers looking to get their music heard?
Mike: So many bands are giving away their music. I mean, I'm a massive fan of Nine Inch Nails, but only recently. I didn't know that much about them until two or three years ago. But what they are doing is they are writing albums and then giving them away for people to write films to. So they will get something back to put on their website for fans. Now you give music away and it makes fans want to come and see your live show, so it works in a different way. It is tough for a new producer to make money these days. But, the best way is to just write some wicked records and get them to the right people and DJs. If you make a buzz you'll get asked to do some re-mixes. It is still the same process. But, rather than approaching a record label, you can do it yourself. Make some good records and get them in DJs record boxes or CD Wallets. Just get them to the right people. Go to clubs and give DJs your tunes and say 'Play that. You'll really like it.' Just be quite forthright about it.
