Katie Melua chats to I Like Music
ILM: Your new album, Pictures, your third, is out on Oct 1st - which track did you enjoy laying down the most?
KATIE: I really enjoyed singing In My Secret Life because weirdly enough I thought Leonard Cohen managed to put into words what I'd never been able to with that song. You know when you're young, you want to be a really great person and you have all these ideals and hopes and you don't want to live in a capitalist society and make decisions based on money and don't want to conform, but you grow up and you lose a bit of your hopefulness and you end up conforming and doing what everyone else does. And that realization is kind of a blow and that song made me realise that.
ILM: Since the release of your debut album 'Call Off The Search' in 2003, the 22 year old has achieved astonishing success. In 2004 and 2005 you were the best selling female artist in Britain and in 2006 became the best selling British female artist in the world with sales of your first album and the follow up, 2005's 'Piece By Piece', have now topped 7.5 million. No mean feat for a singer on an independent record label. How do you suggest artists get the right record deal?
