Katie Melua chats to I Like Music

KATIE: Well If The Lights Go Out is a love song saying that 'I'll be with you until the last moment.' Some people think it's an anti global warming message song, which it isn't at all. It's just trying to be a bit hopeful and also trying to talk about being in love and getting priorities right.

ILM: When we last spoke you said that with song writing you'll probably start with an idea and then start crafting the lyrics and melody to it and you know as soon as you've finished whether a song is good or not. Is that Katie Melua process of gorgeous music making still the same or has it evolved and changed since then?

KATIE: Actually these days I tend to think up the lyrics first, because I've realized that they're the ones that hold the most direct message, then you try to get the music to say what the lyrics can't and then they do develop together and you finish writing them at the same. So yeah it does change actually how you write.

You might argue that you can translate emotions through films and through books but anyone can make music, whether that be humming or singing along to the radio, it’s something that gives enjoyment and positivity to many people.
