Reverend And The Makers chat to I Like Music

ILM: That is an absolutely freakin' awesome track as well!

JON: I think it's a classic, others might disagree. But I think it's a banger and I'm proud of it. My mum likes it. I think the people who do like us, love us, and the people who don't, hate us in a way.

ILM: So you're kind of like Marmite?

JON: Yeah… I think we polarise people, because the people who criticize us say we just write about mundane things, and ask, why do we write about these things? Yet, if I was a hip hop artist would they criticize me for writing about the things I know about?

ILM: Yeah, that's the main rule of writing isn't it? Write about what you know about.

JON: What would they rather me write about? We had a review that really savaged the record. And I felt like there was some kind of class implication. Like the guy who wrote it didn't understand the world where it had come from. And I I'd never wish to confine myself to a class or a region because I want my music to be national and to be bigger and better than that, but, at the same time, it kind of smacked of this class based thing where they just don't understand the cultural references I'm making here. It seems to me they'd missed the point, because I get so many letters from people at my mum's house saying 'thanks for saying that' and 'thanks for standing up for this'. So it's like they must be living in a different world because these people understand exactly what I'm saying.
