John Peel Day - October 13th

It's the very first John Peel Day today -Thursday October 13th. The day will be a celebration of John's life and massive contribution to music and broadcasting with as many venues as possible staging gigs across the UK under the banner of Peel Day.

New Order headlined a tribute gig to the late DJ John Peel on the eve of John Peel Day.

The John Peel Tribute Concert at London's Royal Albert Hall featured Sir Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, David Gilmour and Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks.

Peel's widow Sheila attended the concert. She said before the gig, "It will be odd being there without him, but myself and the rest of the family are looking forward to what should be a terrific night."

Thursday has been designated John Peel Day because it will mark exactly one year since the DJ's last Radio 1 show.

The much-loved Radio 1 DJ died on October 25 last year whilst on holiday in Peru.

How you can be involved!
BBC Radio 1 have encouraged as many people as possible to organise their own gig as a tribute to John. Anything from a couple of unsigned bands down the local pub to hiring an entire venue and booking some Happy Hardcore DJs!

Radio 1 would like to hear about what you have organised.

John Peel was born the day before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. His 38-year career as a radio DJ is the stuff of legend and the bands he went on to discover too numerous to mention, though David Bowie, Roxy Music, T Rex, Genesis, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Radiohead and the White Stripes would do as a start. He lived in Suffolk with his wife Sheila and their children William, Thomas, Alexandra and Florence, plus various dogs and cats, until his death in October 2004.
