The Cure release the second single from their recent self titled album after a hugely successful 2004 which has seen the band re-take their rightful place at the very top of the rock hierarchy.
'Taking Off' is out now, released on October 18th and follows on from first single 'The End Of The World', which was released in July.
Both tracks are lifted from the album 'The Cure' which was released in the UK on June 28th and immediately established itself as a worldwide hit, entering the top 10 of charts in thirteen countries, including #8 in Britain and #7 in the USA. The album has sold over 600,000 copies worldwide to date.
'Taking Off' is a classic Cure single. Stamped with Robert Smith's unmistakable vocals and lovelorn lyrics the track is underpinned by The Cure's irrepressible pop sensibilities that in the past have produced such hits as 'Love Cats', 'Friday I'm In Love' and 'Boys Don't Cry'.
The single and album were produced by lifelong Cure fan Ross Robinson, famed for his work on rock acts such as Korn, Limp Bizkit and At The Drive-In. Robinson encouraged the band to let the more pop orientated numbers come to the surface, the result being some of their most accessible material in years, creating an album that was welcomed by critics and fans alike.
Apart from headlining one of the nights at Manchester's Move Festival in July, the band have been on the road in America headlining the Curiosa Festival which features a host of bands who have been influenced by the band's 25 year career, including Muse, Interpol, Cooper Temple Clause and the Rapture.
To further mark the influence that The Cure have had on over two generations of musicians, MTV will be holding a very special Icons event in London on September 17th where a host of acts will pay tribute. The event is expected to be a precursor to a UK tour later in the year, with details still to be announced.
