DJ Marky

DnB legend DJ Marky has been producing tunes and playing sets around the globe for well over a decade. Having forged a new sound in dnb in his homeland Brazil, he travelled to London in 1997 - met Hype and Goldie and in 1999 was awared Best New DJ by UK critics, leading to residencies at Movement and The End.

Having kicked of 2011 with the January release of FABRICLIVE55: DJ Marky, the Brazilian producer has just released a double A-side collaboration with S.P.Y on Innerground Records. I Like Music sent across some questions to DJ Marky to find out more...

"I Like Music because… music is my life.” DJ Marky

ILM: What's your earliest musical memory?

DJ Marky: Watching classic Brazilian artists like Jorge Ben, Elis Regina and Bebeto on a black and white TV with my parents.

ILM: Do you remember the first tune you made?

DJ Marky: Sea Quest. Find it if you can!

ILM: How do your tunes typically come together?

DJ Marky: I find a sample I’m digging and build from there.

ILM: What do you look for when it comes to vocals?

DJ Marky: An a capella in key!

ILM: What is it about drum and bass that you love?

DJ Marky: The energy and melodies. You can basically put all kinds of music inside D&B, it’s a very open genre.

ILM: Out of all the sets you've played, which have been some of the most memorable?

DJ Marky: Playing my first big show in the UK for the first time (Planet V at MASS 1998) and headlining the legendary Skolbeats back home in Sao Paulo year after year. To be honest though it’s very hard to choose, every gig is special in its own way.

ILM: What's the last tune in your current set?

DJ Marky: I never play the same set twice. You have to read the people and where they want to go.

ILM: You mention your record collection on your myspace page - how big is it? What are some of the hidden gems?

DJ Marky: 30k records! I would have to say one of the most valuable is Jorge Ben’s ‘Jorge Ben on the stage live in Japan.’

ILM: What was the last record you bought?

DJ Marky: A 12” of B.T. Express ‘Does It Feel Good (To You)’

ILM: Can you give us your three ultimate summer tunes?

DJ Marky: DJ Marky & S.P.Y. - Yellow Shoes, Basement Jaxx - Samba Magic, High Contrast - Racing Green.

ILM: Who / what inspires you to make music?

DJ Marky: My son

ILM: What are your future plans?

DJ Marky: Some genre busting collaborations with S.P.Y.
