Following the spectacular success of his Number One debut album, Hand Built By Robots, singer-songwriter and acoustic DIY phenomenon Newton Faulkner releases his brand new single All I Got on October 22nd through Ugly Truth Records. All I Got is Newton at his very best - ultra catchy melodies, beautifully dexterous guitar lines and wistful lyrics delivered with typical wit and verve.
Hand Built By Robots has so far spent two weeks at Number One on the UK album chart, whilst simultaneously hitting No 1 on the Download Chart as well as No1 on iTunes (where it has stayed for five weeks). Meanwhile Newton's last single Dream Catch Me stayed in the Top Ten for three weeks whilst his Myspace has had over 600,000 plays this year.
I Like Music caught up with Newton Faulkner at the BT Digital Music Awards where he was nominated and performed to have a quick chat about his favourite tracks and his new single.
"I Like Music because.... I’m absolutely rubbish at everything else." Newton Faulkner
ILM: With no promotion and bugger-all money your first release, last spring’s Full Fat EP, reached Number One on Amazon’s singles chart. The low key release sold out of its 3000 copies. You’ve embraced the DIY ethic and now your album, Hand Built By Robots is out and topped the chart on release. What track did you have the most fun making?
Newton: Gone In The Morning and She’s Got The Time. That was recorded by me and my brother at home at 4’oclock in the morning after we got back from somewhere. It’s just one mic in a room messing around. We did the guitar and the vocal, and added some stuff later to beef it up a bit. But the core of the track is slightly drunken.
ILM: Your new single, All I’ve Got is out on October 22nd, tell us more?
Newton: I just saw the video for it, it’s really good. I had a lot of fun doing that, it was hilarious. I dressed up like a space man and it was a night shoot as well so I was out in a field from 11pm until 4am.
ILM: It’s all late at night stuff you seem to be doing?
Newton: It does seem to be; there’s not a lot of day stuff. Although I had to get up at 4am yesterday and I went to bed at 4 o’clock in the morning. I was awake for exactly 24 hours.
ILM: You played for Jimmy Paige at his request I heard?
Newton: It was a summer solstice do. That was cool; it was a long time ago now.
ILM: What’s been your highlight of the last six months?
Newton: Glastonbury and all the festivals. I had a really good summer, loads of wicked dates which were cool. And there's more coming up
Newton has become a genuine grass roots success story as his sell-out limited edition EP's, headline dates and support slots have gathered new fans and rave reviews alike. Newton undertakes his biggest UK Tour to date through November and December 2007.
Meanwhile, in the interim, Newton will shortly undertake a 'DIY Tour' of the UK' where his fans get to decide where he plays. This tour will offer a unique opportunity to see Newton up close and personal - keep your eyes peeled as he could be playing in a backyard near you!
